Parents need to know that, like its two predecessors, Spider-Man 3 is a comic book-based movie that features lots of action and superhero-style violence. In this installment, a mysterious black goo makes Peter/Spider-Man significantly more aggressive, arrogant, and combative -- even toward his friends -- which could confuse little kids who have clear ideas about their hero. His negative behavior culminates in him physically harming two people he loves (naturally, he redeems himself by the end). Thanks to the enormous amount of Spidey merchandise and marketing, younger children may want to see this movie -- but know that the action might be too intense for the early-elementary set. (Spoiler Alert: Two characters die during the climactic battle sequence.)

People who see superhero movies just for thrills and chills will find plenty of reasons to love this sequel. But fans seeking Spider-Man 2's unforgettable combination of action, story, and heart will be disappointed in the franchise's third installment.

Families can also discuss the movie's major themes: character transformation, revenge, and redemption. Which characters experience the biggest changes? Do they change for better or for worse? How can you tell?

MASTERS: "Spider-Man 3." And yes, I believe - although Sony Pictures denies it very vehemently - that it is the movie that has passed the $350 million mark. Now they're saying it is a mere $270 million.

MASTERS: Well, I did ask the Sony executive, Bob Osher - who is a high-level guy there and deals with money - what he thought was the most expensive movie ever made, and he went back to everybody's favorite, "Cleopatra."

MASTERS: Well, you start out with the talent, which demands a very large percentage of the movie. You have Sam Raimi, the director. You have Tobey Maguire. You have the producer, Laura Ziskin and others, all lined up for a piece of the profit. Now Sony tells me they have controlled that, and it is less than 25 percent.

MASTERS: Any movie like "Spider-Man" or "Pirates of the Caribbean," these movies are - it's kind of, can you top this? The studios go into them, the directors go into them feeling they must exceed the spectacle of the last one. Otherwise, why are you going to the theater and paying your money? So they commit to a budget, and, you know, the technology has - which enables you to do anything turns out to be sort of a very mixed blessing because then the directors - these are not shrinking violets, these guys - these guys are going to ask for and fight for absolutely everything.

CHADWICK: If I made the most expensive movie ever in the history of movies, wouldn't I want to brag about that? Wouldn't I want to tell movie fans, this movie's got everything that you - we spent a fortune on it, go see it. That will tickets.

And, you know, the effect of it is clear. Somebody said to me recently, I know definitively that "Transformers" - which is coming out over the July 4th weekend - "Transformers" has passed 200 million. And I said, so what? Because we know that "Pirates" is over three and "Spider-Man" is well over three. So as an executive said to me very astutely, it's not even so much that we're all going to make $300 million movies, it's that it - it makes the $200 million movie seem not so bad. And those will kill you.

Spider-Man 3 is the third and final film in the original Spider-Man trilogy directed by Sam Raimi. Like the past two movies, this third flick focuses on the young photographer Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) and his crime-fighting alter-ego Spider-Man. Although the film builds upon story-arcs from previous films and closes most of the existing plot-holes, it also introduces a bevy of new characters and villains.

Jason is a 40-year-old writer from Northern England. He has been playing video games his whole life and writing about them for over a decade. As well as enjoying gaming into the wee hours of the morning, Jason is a real film fanatic too! He is open to watching all genres of movies from animated singing animals to brutal horror!

A video game based on the movie was first released in 2007. It was Released on the PS3, PS2, PSP, GBA, Nintendo DS, PC, Mobile Phones, Xbox 360, and Wii. The Xbox version of Spider-Man 3 was supposed to be released, but it was cancelled due to the systems low sales, and got replaced with the GBA version. Also the GameCube version was cancelled due to its discontinuation.

In the film and the games, Peter Parker has to deal with a few new enemies, including Sandman, Venom, and Harry Osborn, who's taken over his father's mantle as the New Goblin. Along the way, he'll pick up his famous black suit and fight his enemies with the added power that it affords him. The games don't stick very close to the plot of the film, although they do take the primary story points as a starting position and expands upon them to include many of Spider-Man's famous villains that don't appear in the movie.

Spider-Man is one of the most popular and recognizable characters in the Marvel universe and has been featured in numerous comic books, television shows, and movies. He is considered one of the most iconic and influential superheroes of all time.

There are also several other characters who are known to be fans of the character, such as Mary Jane Watson, Harry Osborn, and Flash Thompson, and fans of comics and movies who adore the character and the story of Spider-Man.

The nosedive in ticket sales coincides with the increasing popularity of digital downloads, rentals and original streaming content. Going to the movies is not the most economical affair, after all. Online series like Netflix's celebrated Orange Is the New Black and feature films immediately available for rent pose a threat to the theater-centric economy. Why spend $30 at the movies when you can enjoy something from home that is, more often than not, better than what's showing at the theater?

Perhaps therein lies the solution to Hollywood's current blockbuster crisis: It's not about which movie has the biggest explosions and the best CGI, it's about which movie actually strikes a chord... while also offering an experience that demands to be seen on the big screen.

Judging by box-office figures, the transformation has already begun. The top-grossing films of last year were either animated (Ratatouille, Shrek the Third) or were so reliant on visual effects (Beowulf, I Am Legend, Spider-Man 3) that it is questionable whether they can be called live-action movies.

"Visual effects and animation dominate the movie-going experience like at no time in history," Landau declared. He predicted that the lines between animation and live action, already blurred, will come close to disappearing. Soon, film-makers will use digital techniques as a matter of course. Meanwhile, animators will borrow more and more freely from live action as they attempt to give their cartoons an air of verisimilitude.

Landau was closely involved in developing the Spider-Man movies at Sony. "One of the things that make Spider-Man a seminal property is that the audience feels as emotionally connected to Spider-Man when he is a superhero as they do when Peter and Mary Jane kiss," he suggested. In other words, audiences don't distinguish between the scenes that are done using computer-generated imagery (CGI) and those using old-fashioned live action. 2ff7e9595c
